French

Curriculum Intent Statement

At Priory Academy, we strive to make languages fun, interesting and challenging.

Firstly, learning French is the pleasure of learning a beautiful, rich, melodious language. French is also an analytical language that structures thought and develops critical thinking, which is a valuable skill for discussions and negotiations. France is the world’s top tourist destination and attracts more than 87 million visitors a year. The ability to speak even a little French makes it so much more enjoyable to visit Paris or any other regions of France, and offers insights into France’s culture and way of life. French is the official language in 29 countries, which puts it in second place behind English. The ability to speak French is an advantage on the international job market. Furthermore, French is the international language of cooking, fashion, theatre, the visual arts, dance and architecture. A knowledge of French offers access to great works of literature in the original French, as well as films and songs.

For these reasons, studying French prepares our pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly carried out in languages other than English.

In addition to this, learning French will enable them to gain a greater insight into the culture of the French-speaking world and develop an understanding and respect of different cultures in our local, national and global communities.

The Purpose of Knowledge Organisers
A knowledge organiser sets out the important, useful and powerful knowledge on a topic. For students to succeed in French, they must have a foundation of factual knowledge, understand those facts and be able to apply them to a specific context. We at Priory Academy believe that the use of knowledge organisers can enhance and further students’ learning, therefore we are building them into our curriculum and are encouraging the use of them at home for home learning purposes and for revision. Please click on the correct year group and term for the current knowledge organiser being used.
